1. Containers can “float” during transport
Yes, you read that correctly. During transport on specialized container ships, containers are not just lying on the deck. Each has corner castings that are rigidly locked together and to the ship’s hull. During a severe storm, the ship can list up to 30–40 degrees, yet the containers stay in place. Moreover, the lower rows (in the hold) may not only stand still but also function as part of the hull structure, absorbing loads from the sides.
2. Containers are used to build skyscrapers and bridges
Container architecture is not just trendy cafes and workshops. Dozens of residential buildings, hotels, and even skyscrapers have been built from containers worldwide. The most famous example is a building in London with 120 apartments, entirely assembled from containers. In China, a temporary bridge was built from containers to restore road traffic after a collapse.
3. A container lives several lives
The first active period of a container in maritime transport is about 10–15 years. After that, it becomes “too old” for ocean voyages but is just beginning its second life: warehouse, workshop, modular building. With proper care, a container can last 30–40 years or even longer. The third life is recycling. The container’s steel is used to produce new products, and the cycle begins again.
4. A container protects against pirates and bullets
A standard container is made of Corten steel — an alloy that forms a protective rust layer over time and does not require painting. This steel is used in bridge and shipbuilding. But there are also armored containers — ordered by military and security firms for transporting valuable cargo through dangerous regions. Such containers can withstand small arms fire and shrapnel.
5. A container can be a home for millions of people
According to UN estimates, more than 50 million people worldwide live in converted containers — from students in Europe to refugees in camps. The container has become one of the cheapest and fastest ways to address the housing crisis. In Amsterdam, an entire student campus was built from containers, and in London, temporary housing for the homeless. Interestingly, a container can be converted into a full-fledged apartment with all amenities: insulation, electricity, plumbing, and a bathroom.
A shipping container is much more than “just a steel box.” Behind its external simplicity lie amazing possibilities, from architectural projects to saving human lives.
