What Cannot Be Transported in Containers: A Brief Guide for Shippers

Container shipping is the backbone of modern international trade. Every day, millions of containers cross borders, delivering a vast variety of goods. However, there are clear rules defining what cannot be placed inside a container under any circumstances. Violating these prohibitions risks not only heavy fines and cargo confiscation, but also criminal liability, and in some cases, poses a real threat to life and the environment.

Categories of goods prohibited for transport in standard containers:

• Explosives and pyrotechnics (ammunition, gunpowder, fireworks) — transporting such cargo requires specialized vessels and special stowage conditions. In a standard container, they create a deadly hazard.

• Narcotic and psychotropic substances, as well as precursors for their production — transporting these goods is a criminal offense in all countries of the world.

• Hazardous waste and chemical substances (toxic industrial waste, mercury, acids, alkalis) — a leak can destroy the container and lead to an environmental disaster.

• Live animals and plants without special equipment and permits — a standard container lacks the ventilation, water supply, and temperature control systems necessary for humane transport.

• Items of cultural value and antiques without the appropriate permits — moving such goods without expert examination is treated as smuggling.

• Weapons of any type (firearms, bladed weapons, non-lethal weapons) without licenses and accompanying documents issued by authorized bodies.

• Counterfeit goods infringing copyright and trademark rights — fake products are subject to destruction, and the sender faces liability to the rights holder.

Special attention should be paid to goods that become dangerous under certain conditions: charcoal and cotton (prone to spontaneous combustion), batteries (can short-circuit and cause fires), alcohol-based perfumes (flammable liquids). Even flour and powdered sugar in certain concentrations can create an explosive suspension. Therefore, it is always important to consult with professionals, even when transporting seemingly ordinary goods.

It is also strictly forbidden to conceal cargo — declaring one type of goods while shipping another, understating weight, or attempting to hide prohibited items inside permitted ones. Modern scanners allow customs authorities to see the contents of a container without opening it, and any discrepancy with the documentation is treated as an attempted smuggling.

Responsibility for the contents of a container always lies with the sender. Even if you use the services of a logistics company, you, as the cargo owner, are responsible for what is inside.

Silver Runner recommends always carefully inspecting cargo before shipment and consulting with specialists if there are any doubts about the legality or safety of the goods being transported. We offer only clean, thoroughly checked containers for your legitimate cargo, and our logistics specialists are ready to assist with documentation and selecting the right container type for your needs. Remember: complying with transport regulations is the key to ensuring your cargo arrives safely and intact, and that you avoid problems that could jeopardize your business.
